Rafael Nadal (right) and Joao Sousa (left) playing in the fourth round

Novak Djokovic was the defending champion and successfully defended his title, defeating Roger Federer in four hours and 57 minutes, 7–6(7–5), 1–6, 7–6(7–4), 4–6, 13–12(7–3) to win the Gentlemen's Singles tennis title at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships. It was the longest singles final in Wimbledon history.[1] Djokovic became the first man since Bob Falkenburg at the 1948 Wimbledon Championships to win the title after being championship points down, having saved two when down 7–8 in the fifth set.[2] This is also the first time since the 2004 French Open that a man has saved championship points in order to win a Grand Slam title and the first time that any singles player, male or female, has saved a championship point to win a Grand Slam title since the 2005 Wimbledon Championships. Djokovic became the second man and third singles player overall to win multiple Grand Slam titles after saving match point during the tournament, after Rod Laver and Serena Williams.[3]

Having previously beaten Rafael Nadal in the semifinals, Federer was attempting to become only the second player, after compatriot Stan Wawrinka, to defeat both Djokovic and Nadal in the same Grand Slam tournament. If he had won, it would have marked only the fifth time that one member of the Big Three of Djokovic, Federer and Nadal, had defeated the two other members of the Big Three in the same Grand Slam event, with Djokovic having done it once in 2011 and Nadal three times in 2006, 2007 and 2008, although Djokovic was not as successful as the other two players until 2011, which is when the term Big Three was coined (later expanded to the Big Four from September 2012 until about 2017 to include Andy Murray upon him winning his first Grand Slam singles title at the US Open).

This tournament marked the retirement of former Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis, after he lost in the second round.[4]

With his win in the quarterfinals, Federer became the first man to win 100 matches at the same Grand Slam event. Federer's third round win was also his 350th overall at the Grand Slam level. The semifinals marked the first meeting at Wimbledon between Federer and Nadal since the 2008 final, a match regarded by many as the greatest match in tennis history.[5]

This was the first Wimbledon where a final set tie break rule was introduced. Upon reaching 12–12 in the fifth set, a classic tie break would be played. The men's singles final was the first final, as well as the first singles match, in which the new rule came into effect, with Djokovic winning the tie break 7–3.
