The term encyclopedist is a general term for a person who takes part in producing an encyclopedia. Historically, the term has been applied to describe the group of French philosophes who collaborated in the 18th century to produce Encyclopédie. As well, historians and encyclopedia-producers have both used the term to describe pre-modern individuals.[citation needed]
