The Pan American Gymnastics Union organizes Pan American Gymnastics Championships in different disciplines of gymnastics: men's and women's artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, acrobatic gymnastics, trampoline and tumbling, as well as aerobic gymnastics. The Pan American Gymnastics Championships are considered by the International Gymnastics Federation to be the official continental championships for the Americas (comprising North America, South America, Central America and the Caribbean). The entity also recognizes the South American Gymnastics Championships as the official continental championships for South America.[1] Pan American Championships have also been organized for the sport of aesthetic group gymnastics.

History[edit]

Artistic gymnastics competitions have been contested in the Americas since 1946, at the fifth edition of the Central American and Caribbean Games. In 1951, the sport was contested at the inaugural edition of the Pan American Games, and in 1957 the first edition of the South American championships in artistic gymnastics was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 1964, the North American Championships was contested for the first time. The meet would be staged until 1968, and in 1969 the competition changed its name to Copa de las Americas (Cup of the Americas) to allow South American nations to compete.[2] The event was held in Mexico City, Mexico, and this was the first time a championships in artistic gymnastics was held on a continental level in the Americas.

With the development and growth of gymnastics around the world, rhythmic gymnastics became an Olympic event at the 1984 Summer Olympics, which, in turn, helped the sport make its debut at the 1987 Pan American Games. The following year, a tournament for junior artistic gymnastics from the Americas was established (named the Junior Pan American Games), as well as a junior event for rhythmic gymnasts (named the Junior Rhythmic Pan American Championship).[3] Both events were held in Puerto Rico. The junior tournaments paved the way for a competition for senior artistic and rhythmic gymnasts in 1989, named the Pan American Cup.[3]

Both in 1969 and in 1989, the artistic gymnastics tournaments were officially continental cups, and the artistic gymnastics events at the Pan American Games were part of a multi-sport event. The concept for the Pan American Championships for senior gymnasts was first devised in 1993. The first edition of the tournament was scheduled to take place in December 1993, in Maracaibo, Venezuela.[4][5] The competition, however, was first postponed to February 1994, then to September 1994 as a second edition of the Pan American Cup.[6][7] The tournament was ultimately held as the Junior Pan American Cup in artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, with no rights for senior gymnasts to compete.[8]

It was not until 1997 that the first edition of the Senior Pan American Championships was officially organized in Medellín, Colombia. Two disciplines were contested: artistic gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics. The tournament was supposed to be the second edition of the Pan American Cup, but was eventually titled Pan American Championships.[9][10] A similar competition in artistic gymnastics for South American nations, the South American Gymnastics Championships, had existed since 1957. In 1999, the first edition of the Pan American Aerobic Gymnastics Championships was held in Mérida, Venezuela. In 2004, the Pan American Trampoline and Tumbling Championships were organized for the first time in Tampa, United States. Since 2015, Pan American Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships have also been contested.

Junior events[edit]

The first edition of the Pan American Championships for youth and junior gymnasts was scheduled to take place in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, in 1986.[41][42] The competition, however, was postponed to 1987 and ultimately canceled.[43] Eventually, the first edition of the championships was held in 1988 in Puerto Rico.[3]
