A S Rao[edit]

May i know why was details about AS Rao was deleted? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ravishankar1827 (talkcontribs) 07:16, 25 September 2020 (UTC)

The large block of text added by another editor on 2020-04-07 was plagiarized from here. Please note that your edit was adding a reference to a Wikipedia mirror - a site that copies Wikipedia; this cannot be used as a citation. Kuru (talk) 10:55, 25 September 2020 (UTC)

Iranian Americans[edit]

Kuru, what is the reason for removing my entry "Yasmin Vossoughian" from the "Iranian Americans" page? Thanks you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Puzzleme (talkcontribs) 01:04, 28 September 2020 (UTC)

As noted in the edit summary, "everipedia" is not, in any way, a reliable source. For any claims about living persons, we need to be careful about our sourcing. Kuru (talk) 01:13, 28 September 2020 (UTC)

Seeking Advice[edit]

Hello, Kuru. You recently deleted an article I wrote for the Hector Carlos Lora page, and rightfully so. I did not notice that I had done a copyright infringement, and so I want to not repeat my mistake. Therefore, I'd like to get some advice on how I can proceed. I've written a new article for that page (which I ran through 2 plagiarism detector softwares, both of which turned out with zero plagiarism) but I want to make sure I do it correctly so that it is not deleted, which is why I have not yet published it. Do you have any advice for me so that my article is not deleted? My objective in writing it is so that my hometown is better represented in Wikipedia's community. All the information I've written has links to it so that it is verifiable. Anything else I can do? Thank you, LMPAJ (talk) 21:50, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

It's best to start creating articles in the Draft Namespace. Please be more careful with copyright - the image you added was also fairly questionable. Would be a good idea to not falsify licenses like that. Make sure every claim is clearly sourced to reliable sources. Kuru (talk) 21:08, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

Dear sir, Please Revert my changes.[edit]

With due respect, I never made any promotional edits. You removed that whole paragraph in I mentioned about wireless printer and all . I accepted it but I have done many more required changes also please revert them. I strongly think they improved the article information. Please undo the latest removal.

Regards: Govindsinghlayn

Use reliable sources - the "support" link looks like a third-party spam page. Do not insert your own commentary or puffery about the company or products, especially not superlatives sources to PR puff pieces. Make a draft on the article's talk page if you cannot do this. Kuru (talk) 00:55, 18 October 2020 (UTC)

Posp68[edit]

Thank you for blocking that IP. They've now registered an account Milos Teply which is being used to restore the material that was removed under the pretext that they are not Posp68.--Ermenrich (talk) 16:32, 18 October 2020 (UTC)

Yes, was just digging in to that and had to step away. One sec. Kuru (talk) 16:33, 18 October 2020 (UTC)

IP range global block[edit]

Greetings, way back in 2010 I was hit with an apparent IP "autoblock" that you removed. At that time you mentioned that if it happened again you could make my "account exempt to those kinds of blocks".
My family was in the direct path of Hurricane Laura. We live less than 50 miles north of the U.S. landfall. The area was devastated and there were weeks without electricity or internet but then we were hit with Hurricane Delta. We ran both times. During this time (September 26, 2020) I attempted to log in on my laptop using my cell phone as a hotspot and found I was hit with a global IP block that included my talk page. I had to dig around a lot to find ways to seek being unblocked. I sent some emails to the Stewards that included "My editor user name is otr500. I have been IP blocked: Start of block: 13:51, August 2, 2019 Expiry of block: 12:51, November 2, 2020. IP address is 63.246.153.118 and the blocked range is 63.246.153.0/24. Per the above, the Block ID is number is 225967. Martin Urbanec‬ was apparently the Admin.".
On October 12, 2020, I received the following: Dear Otr500,

"Thank you for reaching out to us. I have reviewed your request, and granted your English Wikipedia account the IP Block Exemption user right.

The only reason you were targeted by a block was because it appears a VPN/Proxy or similar software is being used. Because sockpuppets use this to hide their location and abuse their rights, we have to block them.

Normally I would ask for more information about why you are using a VPN to edit as editors are not normally entitled to edit via a VPN. That said, given your current situation, I can think of a few reasons it would be possible. Also given your edit history, I decided to skip it altogether.

For now you have been granted an exemption for 1 month. If you are still affected by the same block at the end of that time, we can discuss further about what is going on and get clarifications to those questions.

Sincerely, User:AmandaNP English Wikipedia CheckUser"

  • Please note the excerpts are because these are from emails. If you need or want copies of the actual emails I would have to send them to you privately. I linked to AmandaNP for transparency and in case some involvement is necessary.
The reason I am inquiring from you is that even though my block was global I am a Wikipedia editor. AmandaNP gave me a temporary reprieve of one month but I am now seeking to find out if I can get a longer IP Block Exemption at least on the English Wikipedia. I have never been blocked since (until this time) and I have made it a goal to never do anything to get blocked so it was very upsetting.
I do not have any idea about the above mentioned "VPN/Proxy or similar software", how to look into it, or anything about it. If I am logged in as a known editor I really don't understand how a VPN would mask anything. I do not remember where I was at when I tried to log in but I have never logged in anyway other than my laptop or my cell phone.
If there was ever a case for an editor to be trusted with an exemption I feel I would qualify so am seeking (per WP:EXEMPT) to be considered for such a right. Thank you in advance for your consideration, Otr500 (talk) 13:08, 19 October 2020 (UTC)
@Otr500: I apologize for not returning your email urgently, as I was clearing out the queue of 60 others also requesting exemptions and in the timespan of not responding to your email, we are now back to another 30. When I had made the original decision, I took into consideration factors that you did not list here, and that I can't disclose without your permission as it's your private information. The short of it though was that your regular internet connection would be restored and would not need a block exemption that long.
The rundown of it is the IP address you mentioned above, 63.246.153.118, is not registered to your mobile provider (again which I am barred from disclosing) as you thought it was. It's registered to a group called M247. M247 is a company that provides services that masks people's IP addresses and offers them a way to abuse Wikipedia. (For those more experienced with the technical terms, it's a colocator and a webhost) Now as I noted, it was likely there was a completely valid reason that you are being routed through this companies servers given there was likely infrastructure damage to any ISP working in your area, and they may be providing a solution until that is back up. I was right about that being the case, as the company offers disaster recovery solutions. So this explains why your IP address is being routed through there for now.
I really don't want to have to get into the fact that you think it's a right for you to be able to edit Wikipedia, several people will tell you it's not. But, I have provided a way forward for you to edit in our interactions and I don't get why you are challenging my decision with another administrator because I have provided that option. The only reason you are blocked is because your edits are now coming through IP addresses that are to be blocked by policy. Also, IP Block exemptions are routinely never granted indefinitely, and in fact, people who edit from China have to renew their exemption with us usually every few years until we fully establish their need a few times.
Now, I would like to have an amicable return to your editing instead of this mess. If you have a further concern that your IP will still be under this webhost after the time in which your ISP said your service would be restored (which you noted should be relatively soon), then please either note it here, or if you want continued privacy, please use the ticket. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 13:50, 19 October 2020 (UTC)

Need an Advice[edit]

Hi Kuru, I have added the citation from a reliable source which was previously deleted. Will you please guide me what kind of citation is needed for it. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Leslieshafer (talkcontribs) 13:46, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

It is not. You can read our guidelines here: WP:RS. You may want to read our policy on WP:PAID disclosures and guidlines on editing with a really obvious conflict of interest while you're at it. Kuru (talk) 13:50, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Not a spammy link[edit]

Hello Kuru,

hope you are doing great,

I just got your mail where you have alleged me as link spammer. both of my posts were regarding news around the topic which I want to refer as a source for your readers Junaidhayat1197 (talk) 12:20, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

Neither meet the conditions for reliable sources. Both are simple content farms for SEO companies that you have a clear conflict of interest with. Please find better sources. Kuru (talk) 12:24, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

Questions about using Wikipedia[edit]

Dear Kuru,

Thanks for removing a block from my account and allowing me to change the username. I just wanted to ask the following: If I'm a COI, how I can create an article about the company I'm working for, without breaching the Wikipedia rules? Should I disclose it on my user page or ask somebody to create this article?

I would really appreciate your reply since I'm quite new to Wikipedia and didn't know all the rules at the beginning.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Best, Andrew — Preceding unsigned comment added by Andrew 1008 (talkcontribs) 15:45, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

At this point, please do not. You were unblocked on good faith as you indicated you would like to contribute to the encyclopedia, and that you would avoid your COI. This is not a promising sign. Kuru (talk) 15:50, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

For sure, I won't do it, as promised. I will do my best to make contributions to Wikipedia. I just want to understand the rules and how people should proceed if they got this intention. Thanks again for unblocking. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Andrew 1008 (talkcontribs) 16:34, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

thanks, and small favor?[edit]

Hi Kuru, glad you noticed my recent additions (not completed yet) to Alamo Plaza Historic District. It seems i created that as a stub way back in 2008, when NRHP nomination documents were not available on-line. And now I happen to have been developing Draft:Crockett Hotel and found my way back there. Hey if/when you are in the San Antonio area, it would be great if you could take photos of any, hopefully even all, of the separate buildings and memorials and so on which are components in the district. At least one photo of each would be usefully added to the list-article, likely as part of a table with a row for each item, in future editing, as has been done in development of many other historic district articles.

Hey, it would be a small favor if you could accept/move Draft:Crockett Hotel into mainspace. The topic is obviously notable, and anyone could move it to mainspace, but I am under (stupid/undeserved) editing restriction and can't put it there myself. It's more convenient to develop in mainspace, including for reason of adding links to it from elsewhere (which a bot will rip out as "cross-namespace" redirects). No problem if this is not of interest to you to do; it will get moved to mainspace anyhow whenever AFC backlog catches up.

Either way, thanks again for your interest. --Doncram (talk) 01:26, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

Absolutely. I'm not downtown much these days, but would be happy to hunt down some of those sites and get some photos next time I'm there. Note that a few may no longer exist, like the Lady Bird Johnson Fountain. I see that HitroMilanese has already accepted the draft of the Crockett - good call. Family information https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Michael_Moravcsik[edit]

You removed the family information for this page. A cursory look at other physicists page, including Albert Einstein, Sean Carroll, Steven Hawking, Brian Greene, and Lisa Randall all had family information. As a matter of fact, I could not find a physicist page that didn't have this information. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Omnipheasantry (talkcontribs) 21:34, 4 January 2021 (UTC)

@Omnipheasantry: - Great! As noted in my edit summaries, please provide a WP:RS. The one you keep trying to add is a user-editable scraper that often copies Wikipedia, we cannot use that. Kuru (talk) 21:37, 4 January 2021 (UTC)

Ok, I put the original source, although it is behind a paywall. Is that ok? How do you check it if you have to pay for the article? https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2FBF02018140 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Omnipheasantry (talkcontribs) 21:57, 4 January 2021 (UTC)

@Omnipheasantry: - My apologies for not being specific. You'll notice my edits remove the "prabook" site - that is the unacceptable reference I was pointing to. To answer your other question, yes- you can use links behind paywalls. It's preferable to use ones that are accessible, but it's no different than using a book as a source - I'd still need to find the book. Kuru (talk) 22:01, 4 January 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for clarifying. I found another source for that information and deleted the prabook source. Thanks for volunteering. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Omnipheasantry (talkcontribs) 22:34, 4 January 2021 (UTC)

In November, you blocked User:EJY257 for persistent edit-warring at Gemological Institute of America. He or she is now evading that block using User91.140.133.248. A block of that IP address seems to be in order. Thanks! ElKevbo (talk) 05:24, 9 January 2021 (UTC)

Hello Kuru,

I very much appreciate you helping to make the article better. I have no excuse for the error, it was mine.

Draft:Syed Falak[edit]

Hi Dear Kuru I have submitted the draft and i just saw that you made edits on it so I want to know what is the next process to successfully publish that page on Wikipedia? What type of citation Wikipedia need to verify that page. Is The New York Times citation is reliable? Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.175.72.15 (talk) 16:19, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

I would encourage you to read our guidelines on reliable sources, as well as our policy on biographies. Given the nature of the junk that's been added to that article, I would strongly suggest reading WP:COI and ensure you are complying with our paid editing disclosures. Kuru (talk) 16:39, 19 January 2021 (UTC)

It's another SEO dump. This one is run by a group of PR people to make it look like a newspaper and have tried to hitch it to the reputation of a defunct historical newspaper. Find reliable sources. Kuru (talk) 22:28, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for your prompt response. Is there any time limit to find the reliable source? I mean the draft will remain as it is? And one more thing. Can you move this draft into article space with or without BLP sources template? Something like Sarah Khan. 203.175.72.15 (talk) 03:54, 7 February 2021 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 39.41.160.41 (talk)
It will remain in the draft state for six months after the last edit to it. No, I cannot move an unsourced BLP into articlespace. Why would you even ask that? Kuru (talk) 22:55, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
I'm sorry but I asked because I saw some pages like Sarah Khan those pages are in article space with BLP sources template so I thought maybe there is some way to move Syed Falak draft into article space.203.175.72.15 (talk) 04:18, 7 February 2021 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 39.41.160.41 (talk)

@Mztourist:, yeah, that's always weird. There are several articles like there where someone probably posts the old meme on a forum somewhere and then there's a rush to reintroduce the joke. At least we can likely forget it for a year or so. Kuru (talk) 14:52, 22 January 2021 (UTC)

Draft:Sándor Belák[edit]

Dear Kuru, I see that you have been into this article draft and marked that "as before, this is not a WP:RS". With due respect, the article in my view is very objective, all statements are referenced by articles published by peer-reviewed scientific journals (it contains altogether 22 references). Would you be so kind to specify a bit closer what do you consider as a "not reliable source", so I can improve the article. I would be very grateful for all help! Thanks a lot in advance and have a nice day! Kind regards --Fmasszi (talk) 13:50, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

You mean besides the one "reference" I removed with a very specific edit summary noting why it was not acceptable? Kuru (talk) 13:52, 27 January 2021 (UTC)
Hello, Kuru, sorry for the delay in replying. I do not see the "very specific edit summary why it was not acceptable". What I see you removed a Prabook reference

Portrait of Sándor Belák that's fine. What else should be removed? I have no COI, are not paid at any way, have no specific interest in this, just want to contribute and if I worked with it would like to see it public. All referenced articles are from peer-reviewed scientific newspapers. Please help how I can improve the article, I will do it if I know how. Thanks in advance! --Fmasszi (talk) 16:38, 20 February 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for your help with the Public Relations Society of America edit...[edit]

Hi, thank you very much for your quick response to making the update to the name of the Public Relations Society of America's Chair, I really appreciate it. Going forward, is this the type of change I can make on my own, or is it always better to request an editor's assistance as I did here? Thanks again.

Rod Granger Rhdg1 (talk) 17:41, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

Howdy, Rod. Purely factual edits are usually fine, but it's a third rail. Given your COI and the PRSA's disappointing showing here, I would treat all the rails as electrified. Please understand that we spend a tremendous amount of time dealing with the far less reputable part of the PR industry, and nerves are frayed. I think it advisable to stick to the talk page out of an abundance of caution; just my opinion. You may also want to review WP:PAID for minimum viable interaction expectations. Kuru (talk) 18:19, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

Executive Search[edit]

Retained search firms provide a guarantee to do an assignment over if the hired candidate leaves before a stated milestone (anywhere from one year to three years), generally with the caveat there has not been a material change in the position requirements or management team.[citation needed] In a retained search, the fee is for the time and expertise of the search firm. The firm is employed to conduct the entire recruitment effort from startup until the candidate has started working.[citation needed] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maxxmaven (talkcontribs) 18:56, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

Why are my edits considered disruptive editing or spam?[edit]

Hello, I am new to editing, and I thought I was being helpful in adding some stats on current trends. Why was my edit flagged?

"Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia, as you did at Telecommuting, you may be blocked from editing. It is considered spamming and Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising or promotion. Because Wikipedia uses nofollow tags, additions of links to Wikipedia will not alter search engine rankings. Kuru (talk) 17:42, 2 February 2021 (UTC)"

GreenScreen1 (talk) 18:37, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

As noted, you've added a link to a non-reliable source - a content marketing blog. You've also copied the material verbatim: a copyright violation. Given the nature of the blog post, this appears to be promotional. Please don't do that. Kuru (talk) 18:42, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

Edit summary[edit]

Hi. On this edit summary "rmv non-WP:RS : fake news site / SEO dump". The first time is sufficient. "Fake news" is a controversial and poorly defined term. And I've no idea what SEO dump is? I only raise this as edit summaries should help your fellow editors understand what you're doing, and this instead raises queries (and because you're using it across multiple pages). Mark83 (talk) 15:37, 6 February 2021 (UTC)

This is one of a series of blogs created by a single SEO firm which pretend to be "news" sites. This would be "fake news" in the literal sense, not in the random political jargon-of-the-day. if there's a specific instance you'd like me to double-check, I'd be happy to. Kuru (talk) 15:44, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
Yeah I'm probably over-sensitive due to the use of "fake news" as a term in politics. On SEO, given a Wikipedia search and what you've said above I assume we're talking about Search engine optimization? If you're going to be reusing the edit summary it might be helpful to add a link in the edit summary. Like I say, it's just so that the edit summary is clear to all. No need to double check any edits themselves. Thank you for your time replying. Mark83 (talk) 15:49, 6 February 2021 (UTC)
Given the adulteration of that phrase, I'll work up an edit summary that's more clear. I'm now seeing about 60 of those dumps that have been added in a campaign over the last month, so it's going to be more visible as I remove them. It's a mess. Thank you for the feedback. Thota Tharani Page Editing[edit]

Hi Kuru Please let me know why you removed all the changes we made to Thota Tharani sir's page. I am authorised by him and based on his inputs, we have edited the page and it is quite disappointing that you have removed all the edited inputs to the page which we did in December. Can you please let us know the reasons Regards Umasree — Preceding unsigned comment added by Raghunau (talkcontribs) 08:55, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

Not sure where to begin. The material was complete promotional puffery and unacceptable here. Parts of it were copied from other sites. The links added included Wikipedia mirrors and other junk blogs. You will also want to read WP:PAID and WP:COI before making any other edits. Kuru (talk) 11:46, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

Hello[edit]

Hey, Kuru. I’d appreciate it if you could tell me how to make the gangs I listed in the “Gangs in Minnesota” article like the three listed below. This was very confusing to me so I just did whatever I could to make it work. RelatedToMarioPrayer (talk) 02:04, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

Just create a new "list" article - maybe model it off of List of criminal gangs in Los Angeles or a similar one. Best to keep it to notables entities and well-sourced. I can make a start for you in the draft space if you'd like. Kuru (talk) 02:15, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

can this IP be blocked?[edit]

deleted links[edit]

Hi Kuru, I understand and accept your point of view regarding the links to special articles like "Account based Marketing" - sorry if that was against the guidelines. But please reconsider the deletion of the 3 PDFs in product management. Months ago beside those links I have also added content and helped to structure the product management site, which had been accepted so long. The PDFs are not commercial and completely free of charge, so why shouldn't they be appropriate for further reading? The PDFs were directly linked (not the Website itself) and are so extensive that's impossible to transmit the content into Wikipedia... So in my view it's at least worth to discuss...

I think this would be a good time for you to adjust your approach to editing here. If you are unable to ethically contribute without promoting your business interests, then your account is likely to be locked. Kuru (talk) 13:01, 22 February 2021 (UTC)

Nikocado Avocado[edit]

Hey! This is a request for outside comments on an article I created which may be of interest to you, Nikocado Avocado. If you have any feedback or edits you could give the article, these would be greatly appreciated. --Bangalamania (talk) 11:57, 25 February 2021 (UTC)

Rules for copyrighted materials[edit]

Hi Kuru, I have just noticed that my entry for Robert Fernea (UTex Professor of Anthropology) was removed for including copyrighted material. That seems to be the Reed obituary https://www.reed.edu/reed-magazine/in-memoriam/obituaries/2018/robert-a.-fernea-1954.html. This is confusing for me because the page, while considered an entry under their Reed Magazine portion of their website, is not marked with copyright anywhere on the page. It is part of an index of dozens of obits, listed in hyperlink form on the right side of the same page. Please help me to understand how that is considered copyrighted material when it is a) in the public domain with no sign in nor paywall b) has no indication of authorship and c) no mark of copyright. Thanks, Christine Z Gish Consulting LLC Gishconsult (talk) 02:32, 28 February 2021 (UTC)

Unfortunately, that's not how the public domain works today. You cannot take someone else's published material and re-release it under another license - license notification on the page or not. Just write your own prose; you can still use that publication as a reference. It may also be best to use the WP:DRAFT space for this. Kuru (talk) 02:55, 28 February 2021 (UTC)

This group is either paid placement sinks working on their SEO, or just ad sales. There are about 40 sites in the farm, all be added by IPs in the country of the registrants. Will likely just blacklist the lot if they persist; there's no chance this is just people falling for false news sites. Kuru (talk) 13:10, 1 March 2021 (UTC)
