Samoa is a republic.[edit]

Consensus states that Samoa is a republic.

Furthermore:

  • Samoa's Head of State is elected by the country's Parliament for a five year term.
The UAE and Malaysia's cases don't apply to Samoa: Malaysia is a federal state, and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is elected for a five year-term by the hereditary monarchs of Malaysia's subnational states from among themselves, and rotates between them for each term according to a predetermined order. The UAE works the same way, but the monarch of Abu Dhabi is always elected President instead of having rotation between all the Emirs.
On the other hand, Samoa is a unitary state (so there's no subnational monarchies), and its head of state is elected by Parliament for a fixed term – just like other world-famous constitutional monarchs such as Sergio Mattarella, Kersti Kaljulaid and János Áder.
  • The fact the President of Samoa is called "O Le Ao O Le Malo" doesn't make Samoa any less of a Republic – it's a bit like arguing Ireland is a tribal confederacy because Leo Varadkar's title is Taoiseach, which originally meant "clan chief", instead of Prime Minister.
  • The fact the President of Samoa was always elected from among the tribal chiefs doesn't make Samoa any less of a Republic – every elective office in Samoa is required to be held by a tribal chief. It's exactly like the fact elective positions in Lebanon are reserved for specific religions and the President of Lebanon must be Christian.
