It is quiet here just now.

The usual suspects[edit]

They're back right away [1] :( Once I'm at my desk (in an hour) I'll handle the report and ask for PP also. Quite a pity for the sensible user you have assisted lately. –Austronesier (talk) 13:10, 29 January 2020 (UTC)

Ah, so I see. You would think they would have the sense to wait a little longer! Thanks. -- Sirfurboy (talk) 14:04, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
FYI - Done [2][3]. –Austronesier (talk) 14:13, 29 January 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for doing that. Now he has made clear that he is another sock, I looked harder at his past edits and am going to revert one of them. -- Sirfurboy (talk) 14:18, 29 January 2020 (UTC)

Grimms law[edit]

Concerning your edit on Germani cisrhenani, I am not so sure? If you look at our article for Grimms law it is treated as synonymous with the first Germanic sound shift. Jacob Grimm defined Germanic languages this way?--Andrew Lancaster (talk) 11:07, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi, @Andrew Lancaster:, and welcome to my talk page. Perhaps this should be discussed on the article talk page rather than here, as other editors may have a view. Jacob Grimm certainly described the law with reference to Germanic languages, but we now know that the same sound changes happen in all languages. Indeed, in Celtic languages they became part of the grammar. See "mutations" in Welsh, for instance. The way that happened is fascinating, but remains linked to the fact that the sound changes defined by the law happen with all languages. Understanding why they happen is a major topic in Guy Deutscher's "The Unfolding Of Language".
But again, if we discuss on the article talk page, it may be other editor's feel, as you do, that Grimm's law should be synonymous with Germanic. I am more than happy to go with the consensus view. -- Sirfurboy (talk) 12:00, 3 February 2020 (UTC)
I hope you don't mind if I revert and then post on the talk page. Main reason for doing it this way is to avoid forgetting it later.--Andrew Lancaster (talk) 12:11, 3 February 2020 (UTC)
Actually I just re-named the wikilink. That resolves the discussion on that article, but perhaps there should be one on Grimm's law?--Andrew Lancaster (talk) 12:14, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

-- Sirfurboy (talk) 17:03, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

My rollback[edit]

I'm sorry for my mistake at User:Sirfurboy, I followed the link from Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Race and intelligence (4th nomination) since I didn't know you yet, then inadvertently clicked on rollback, so have then self-reverted. —PaleoNeonate – 06:27, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

PaleoNeonate (talk · contribs), thanks for your explanation, and no problem - accidents happen. I wonder, though, did you find what you were looking for? Would you recommend I request a revdel? :) But, yes, no harm done. -- Sirfurboy (talk) 11:53, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

The AFD[edit]

This is a very nuanced nomination. I just wanted to say that I really respect your thoughtful, well-reasoned comments throughout. I think your restraint and strict focus on the content issues has helped keep a potentially explosive discussion civil and productive. Schazjmd (talk) 16:13, 7 February 2020 (UTC)

Schazjmd (talk · contribs), thank you for taking the time to say that. I really appreciate that. Thank you also for your input in the discussion. Now we have to wait and see what the outcome is. Take care. -- Sirfurboy (talk) 19:35, 7 February 2020 (UTC)

Good AfD on Race and Intel. Face-smile.svg Thank you   // Timothy :: talk  00:08, 12 February 2020 (UTC)

IPA needed[edit]

[ˌsɜːˈfɜːbɔɪ̯] or [ˈsɜːfəˌbɔɪ̯]Emojione1 1F3C4? –Austronesier (talk) 09:35, 12 February 2020 (UTC)

Austronesier (talk · contribs) LOL, that would be telling :) The ambiguity is deliberate! But since you ask, and since I added the emoji (because I found there is a user "sulfurboy" and wanted to avoid confusion with him), I tend to think of it as the latter. I have often been referred to as "Furboy" though (I didn't know furries were a thing when I first chose the name many years ago), so either is fine. -- Sirfurboy Emojione1 1F3C4 (talk) 10:22, 12 February 2020 (UTC)
Ok, Sir/dude. It has just come into my mind that [ˌsɜːfəˈbɔɪ̯] would also be an option. Gives it a Norman touch... :D –Austronesier (talk) 10:59, 12 February 2020 (UTC)
Yes, I like that too :) Thanks. -- Sirfurboy Emojione1 1F3C4 (talk) 11:03, 12 February 2020 (UTC)

Hats off[edit]

I wanted to complement you on your deletion review comments here [[4]]. It's often hard to question the process when the result is what you want. But you are 100% right that in a case like this editors need to know that the process was fair. I was involved in what I considered a bad close (delete even though by weight of numbers things were very 50:50 followed by a "no consensus to over turn"). Like this case I felt that, right or wrong, the close was done badly and thus the results weren't really valid. It's good to see the person who proposed the deletion here arguing that it's more important to be faithful to the process than to "win". Hats off to you. FYI, per WP:SIGIMAGE Images of any kind must not be used in signatures. Just wanted to give you a heads up. – Frood (talk) 22:56, 16 February 2020 (UTC)

Frood (talk · contribs) Thanks for the heads up. I have removed it. I only added it as I spotted another active user called Sulfurboy and thought I was seeing double :) I will find another way to make my name distinguishable from his. -- Sirfurboy (talk) 23:03, 16 February 2020 (UTC)
Although, I wonder if using the actual emoji (🏄) rather than the image would be allowed. I think probably? There are definitely other people who use emoji in their sigs. – Frood (talk) 23:14, 16 February 2020 (UTC)
Oh excellent. Yes, that will work. I had noticed the emojis which is why I thought I was OK with that, until you said the above and I took a quick look at the source of their sigs. I will slot that in instead. Thanks again. -- Sirfurboy (talk) 23:16, 16 February 2020 (UTC)
